From The IS Foundation: Tony The Truck Stop Tiger   Leave a comment

From The IS Foundation:

We have all heard of “Tony the Tiger”, but have you ever heard of “Tony the truck stop tiger?” Tony the truck stop tiger is a ten year old Siberian- Bengal tiger and he is the current attraction at a local truck stop in Grosse Tete, Louisiana. Tony has been caged at this truck stop for the past ten years and alone for the past seven years. Tony’s home consists of diesel fumes, loud trucks, and not to mention the harassment of the tourists that come through there day and night.

Tony’s cage is nothing but cement and bars; there is no homey feel to this cage for a tiger. Being in a closed cage with nowhere to run can cause stress on a tiger creating him to pace back and forth. In doing this it can cause the pads on his feet to wear down and become sore and injured. If tigers are caged in they at least need room to run around and stretch their legs as well as a pool to bathe in on hot days; there also needs to be trees for shade and places to hide just as if they were in the wild. Although tigers do live longer in captivity a truck stop is no place for a tiger to be. There is no telling what the fumes are doing to the tiger as well as the stress he is under.

“Michael Sandlin, the owner of Tony and the truck stop, has been cited by the USDA due to violations of the Animal Welfare Act, including a lack of proper sanitation and improper feeding practices” (Animal Legal Defense Fund).

“On April 11, 2011, ALDF filed a lawsuit against the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and its secretary Robert Barham, arguing that he violated state law in granting a permit allowing Sandlin to exhibit Tony at the Tiger Truck Stop” (ALDF).

“On Friday, May 6, District Judge R. Michael Caldwell of the East Baton Rouge District Court granted the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s (ALDF) request for a permanent injunction against the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), preventing them from renewing the annual permit that allows Michael Sandlin to keep Tony as of this December 14” (Care2).

Although Tony doesn’t know it there are people all over the world are fighting for his freedom. Even though he will be free on December 14, 2011 people are still fighting for him to be freed now! ”The ALDF plans to work with the LDWF to find the best home for Tony and will make recommendations on sanctuaries where Tony can live out the rest of his days in an environment that can actually meet his needs” (Care2). We are all looking forward to the day that Tony the Truck Stop Tiger will be able to leave the truck stop and all those harmful fumes and loud noises behind for a new life full of nature and those wild tiger adventures ahead of him.

We are very appreciative of the recent decision on May 6, 2011 by Judge R. Michael Caldwell who granted a permanent injunction barring the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries from issuing any further permits to Tony’s owner Mr. Michael Sandlin. While the decision is a positive action for Tony, the court refused to order the LDWF to revoke the current permit, which expires on December 14, 2011. Tony remains at the truck stop until then.

“Even though the court refused to order the Department to revoke the current permit, the Department retains the authority to do so on its own if it chooses.” Source:

There is no reason why Tony must languish and suffer at the truck stop until mid December. It’s important to continue supporting Tony and advocating for his early release to an accredited, reputable and humane big cat sanctuary and to keep his story highly visible.

Two such sanctuaries, Big Cat Rescue of Tampa FL and The Wildcat Sanctuary of Sandstone MN both have publicly offered homes for Tony where he would be provided with a natural habitat, proper diet, medical care, and enrichment.

How You Can Help Tony:

You can support Tony by signing and sharing his two ALDF sponsored petitions: and

It’s very important that all correspondence for Tony be done in a respectable focused manner. While we are all very passionate and concerned about Tony, his health and welfare, please remember polite and focused letters have a better chance of being addressed and our concerns taken seriously. When you advocate for Tony, you are representing him – he deserves the utmost respect as do the individual(s) we are writing to. You can use the text of the ALDF petitions listed above as references to construct your letter.

Voice your concerns for Tony, for the current permit to be revoked and for Tony to be relocated to a reputable, established, humane accredited big cat sanctuary that will meet all of his needs to:

VICTORY FOR TONY, the Truck Stop Tiger!

 Breaking News….Victory for Tony

A couple of months ago, I wrote about a beautiful tiger called Tony, the 10 year old Bengal/Siberian used as a roadside attraction in Louisiana. The only life Tony has known is one in a hideous truck stop, breathing fumes from vehicles, and used as a tourist attraction for passers-by to gawk at. After a very, very long campaign (just over three years) thousands of petition signatures, and blogs, videos and articles published all over the world (including messages from celebrities such as Leonardo di Caprio and Ian Somerhalder who is originally from Louisiana), a judge has FINALLY ruled in favour of Tony and against his owner Michael Sandlin. I cannot describe how elated I feel, especially since when this great news broke, I was actually in hospital after an accident and missed the moment this victorious ruling was made. On 6th May 2011, Judge R. Michael Caldwell granted a permanent injunction which blocks The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries from issuing a new permit to Tony’s owner Michael Sandlin. READ MORE ABOUT THIS HISTORIC RULING HERE
VICTORY FOR TONY!!! And VICTORY for all those who have worked tirelessly, campaigning on behalf of this beautiful animal. Captive tigers continue to be a growing problem in the United States, and Tony is not the only privately owned tiger. If I met the legal team from the Animal Legal Defense Fund I think I would touch their feet in gratitude (no exaggeration) for securing this victory for Tony. I cannot wait for the day he leaves his horrible truck stop behind and goes to a beautiful sanctuary where he can live the rest of his days in peace. I know he will not know life in the wild, as a tiger ought to, but surely his quality of life will be much improved, free from the noise and fumes of his truck stop home.
I have written letters, campaigned, blogged and tweeted, and as one of the thousands of people who has been fighting for Tony, this feels like a very personal victory. Never believe one person can’t make a difference, for in doing what you can, in some small way, you are giving a voice to the voiceless, and speaking up against the injustices that take place every second of every day. I am now going to support the Animal Legal Defense Fund from halfway across the world, because they have proven that NOBODY is above the law and no case is too difficult to fight for, when it comes to the welfare of our fellow creatures.
It’s been a very difficult week, but I feel strangely optimistic about things. We can make a difference, so lets never stop trying, fighting ad doing what we can to help the animals and human beings that need us the most. And much gratitude goes to Judge R. Michael Caldwell for doing the right thing and making the obvious ruling for Tony’s welfare in this case.

From ISF Italian Support: Tony la Tigre Libera!   Leave a comment

Tony received wonderful support on Twitter from Ian Somerhalder, The Ian Somerhalder Foundation and the ISF Family. The Ian Somerhalder Foundation has support groups all over the world that have taken Tony’s story to heart and truly helped in making it a global issue and generating more support for him. Grazie ISF Italian Support for this great post for Tony!

Tony la Tigre LIBERA! – Tony the Tiger FREE!

Here it is how the perseverance and good will of a group of people can help in building a better world, though for a short fraction of time or in a tiny corner of the Earth.

Tony’s story teaches us that firmly believing in our ideas and fighting for them to be affirmed is the key for building a world, we can be proud to live in.

On 6th May the ADLF (Animal Legal Defense Fund) obtained a great victory for this old Siberian tiger, kept in a cage and displayed at a truck stop station since 2001 by Michael Sandlin, owner of Grosse Tete Tiger’s Truck Stop in Louisiana. Judge R. Michael Caldwell has decided that when – in December 2011 – the current permit of Sandlin will expire, it won’t be renewed. Now a new home for Tony is been looked for, where he’ll be able to live his last years, away from the noise and the smog of Tiger Truck Stop.

Tony will never taste the flavour of real freedom, he’ll never know what living in the boreal or mixed temperate forests means (which are Siberian tigers’ natural habitat, author’s note) and maybe he’ll never understand how many of us have fought to assure dignity to his last years. But we do believe this is an important step forward in awakening public opinion, leading to the absolute prohibition of privately detaining such wonderful animals.

Heartfelt thanks to all of you who roared for Tony, through Twitter, Facebook or writing to authorities to ask for his freedom. We have succeeded: once our slogan was “Free Tony The Tiger”, now we can shout it loud: “Tony the Tiger (is) Free”.

Because of Ian ( #BecauseofIan ) more people have come to learn about this beautiful tiger who has been kept for 10 long years as a roadside attraction in the unnatural and unhealthy environment of a truck stop. Raising awareness for Tony is very important because it keeps Tony’s story active while continuing to work towards a proper home for him. Easy ways to network for Tony:
