UPDATE! Tweetstorm and @ShortyAwards 2015!   Leave a comment

Thank You Trend

THANK YOU for making Tony’s Tweetstorm a ROARING Success!

We “officially” held our Tweetstorm from 1pmEST – 2pmEST on Monday April 20th because of an engagement we were attending that evening in New York City ~ The Shorty Awards.

Yesterday we posted that the hashtag we used, #Shorty4Tony, didn’t trend.

UPDATE! Thanks to friends who kept tweeting and watching the top trends, #Shorty4Tony trended in the U.S. and U.K.!

The Shorty Awards recognize the best in social media and for the second year in a row, Tony ( @TonyTiger2000 ) was a finalist in the Non-Human Category.

If you follow Tony on Twitter you’ll be familiar with his tweets to raise awareness for captive tigers and big cats, his support of numerous animal issues, and his endearing friendships with @LucyLiberte, @IamSmittyKitty and countless other friends.

Tony’s Shorty Awards Campaign focused on the plight of captive tigers in the United States, and although he didn’t win, he raised tremendous awareness for tigers…and of course Tony is always a winner in our hearts.

Our advocacy on behalf of Tony continues in a positive and focused direction as does our support of The Animal Legal Defense Fund’s procurement of Tony’s release to a reputable big cat sanctuary. Social media is an important part of keeping Tony, updates on his case and the issue of captive tigers networked and retaining people’s support and interest.

The beloved Smitty

Me and Cheeseburger

It has taken me some time to collect my thoughts and words for this post. Being the guardian of three adopted cats who amaze me every day, I have discovered what wonderful unique souls they are and how they completely capture your heart, enrich your life and give you unconditional love and friendship.

It all started with my first boy, Cheeseburger who will forever be my soul cat. He came into my life in 1997 and we shared 10 years together before I lost him to cancer. I was devastated and vowed I would never have another cat.

So much for that…I have since adopted three boys: Mr. Jingles, Tony Cat, and yes another Cheezeburger. They all have their stories…in time ~ maybe in another post.

Social media has been a tremendous asset in keeping Tony’s story networked with people all over the world learning about him and the serious issue of privately owned tigers and big cats in the United States. It also has formed wonderful friendships that I cherish – that being said I’d like to dedicate this post to a very special family and their amazing cat Smitty.

Tony’s emergence on Twitter came about in April 2011. Though we already had a Twitter account @FreeTonyTiger, we thought  since an escaped cobra from the Bronx Zoo could tweet…why not a tiger from a truck stop? If you follow Tony on Twitter @TonyTiger2000, you’ve undoubtedly run across the engaging conversations between the #BigGuy Tony and his “bestest” #LittleBuddy Smitty @IamSmittyKitty. The two meet up on Twitter during the week and they’re definitely quite the dynamic duo or as @LucyLiberte calls them “Double Trouble.”

Since Tony isn’t very fond of truck stop grub…he and Smitty sample cuisine from different establishments – Smitty and Tony actually met on Twitter over lasagna.

The seriousness of Tony’s captivity at the truck stop is never downplayed – and Smitty is always there to give Tony encouragement and support:

Sadly we lost Smitty to a disease called cardiomyopathy, a heart condition that results in an enlarged heart. You can read more about this from Smitty’s mom on her blog:

wlf smittyWe were all devastated by the news…any one who has lost a companion knows the tremendous grief and heartache you suffer from such a loss. Our condolences and love go out to Smitty’s loving guardians and Smitty’s “sis” @IamTweeterKitty.

We are so thankful Smitty’s guardians “shared” their special little guy with us. Smitty brought a smile to all of us and we looked forward each day to his HEY EVABODDY tweet to get the Twitter conversation going. There were many a times that Smitty’s tweets made me LOL.

Smitty’s Dad made the courageous and selfless decision to keep Smitty tweeting…we’re very grateful that Smitty and Tony will be able to continue their special friendship and connect with anipals and friends worldwide.

As Tony would say: “Smitty iz da bestest #LittleBuddy a tiger cood eva haf!!”

Roar On For Tony & Friends in 2012!   Leave a comment

With the start of a new year, special thoughts go out to the beautiful tiger we all love and care about: Stay Strong Tony, we are resolute in fighting for the home and life you deserve. One of the best “gifts” we can give Tony is our advocacy for his release to a reputable humane sanctuary. Please see: “How Long Should You Try? Until.” for important ways we can continue to support Tony. Updates will be posted when they become available.

Sincerest Thanks to ALL of Tony’s friends. Your tremendous support and dedication to him positively impacts his release to a proper home. As we voice our concerns for Tony, hopefully we also raise awareness to the problem of privately owned tigers in the United States. What more poignant representative for these tigers could there be than Tony, who has spent his life as a roadside attraction at a truck stop.

On Saturday Tony’s Care2 petition reached 45,000 signatures! The petition is still open and it’s a good medium to keep Tony’s story networked and people involved. A look at the signatures confirms that Tony has touched the hearts  and minds of people worldwide who support his relocation to a proper sanctuary.

Advocating for Tony has opened up a global network of friends with important animal welfare issues – and supporting each other is vital as we advocate for the welfare and rights of animals. Twitter has been a great vehicle for Tony. If you follow “Tony” @TonyTiger2000 on Twitter, you may know some of his “friends” who are also in dire situations and need our help: @LucyLiberte and @AbusedNYCHorse

Please take action on these issues if you agree that keeping a lone elephant in a zoo is cruel and the carriage-horse industry in New York City is inhumane.

Lucy spends a majority of her life indoors.

Lucy ( @LucyLiberte ) is a 36 year old elephant who lives alone at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. Lucy was captured from the wild in Sri Lanka when she was a baby and sent to the zoo in 1977. Because of the cold Edmonton weather Lucy spends a majority of her time indoors in her barn. Lucy has a very dedicated group of friends and organizations like ZooCheck Canada and Friends of Lucy who are working towards her release to an elephant sanctuary:  The Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) or The Elephant Sanctuary

You can read more about Lucy and how you can help her at these sites:

@AbusedNYCHorse tweets for an end to the carriage horse industry in NYC. There have been accidents involving carriage horses as well as horses collapsing; one recent tragic incident saw a horse named Charlie collapse and die on a NYC street. These beautiful animals are worked everyday in all weather conditions and must contend with dangerous traffic and unhealthy inhumane conditions.

Wildcat Haven Sanctuary Update: WCH Sanctuary exceeded their goal of 4,000 “LIKES” on their Facebook page by January 1, 2012! Each new “LIKE” equaled a $1.00 donation and 828 new friends generated $828.00 for the cats! WCH is a great friend and supporter of Tony and they provide exceptional homes for big cats. From the WCH website: “WildCat Haven is an American Sanctuary Association (ASA) accredited 501(c)3 non-profit, no-kill sanctuary located in Sherwood Oregon committed to providing permanent homes for captive born wildcats. As a true sanctuary we are not open to the public & do not buy, sell, breed or exhibit. ”
