Take Action For Big Cats!   Leave a comment

A circus tiger looks out of his transport cage after being loaded onto a truck.

As we continue to support Tony and advocate on behalf of his release to a reputable sanctuary, we can also help other big cats like Tony in the United States.

Tony’s petition reached 20,000 signatures on International Tiger Day; please sign if you haven’t, and share the link; it’s important to keep people aware and supportive of Tony:

Here are some actions you can take for tigers and other big cats:

  • Urge USDA To Prohibit Public Contact With Big Cats, Bears And Primates

On October 18th, 2012, the one year anniversary of the Zanesville tragedy,  Big Cat Rescue of Tampa FL, Humane Society of the United States, World Wildlife Fund, International Fund for Animal Welfare, The Fund for Animals, Born Free USA and the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries filed a legal petition asking the U.S. Department of Agriculture to prohibit public contact with big cats, bears and primates under the Animal Welfare Act. Read more about it here: http://www.examiner.com/article/big-cat-rescue-and-big-cat-coalition-seek-ban-on-big-cat-cub-petting

Urge the U.S. Department of Agriculture to act quickly on this petition to put a stop to public handling of big cats, bears, and primates:

  • More Tigers in American Backyards than in the Wild

And estimated 5,000 plus tigers are privately owned in the United States, more than left in the wild:

  • Tiger Cubs Used In Pay For Play Scam

Recently Good Morning America presented a story about a roadside zoo that charges money to swim with tiger cubs. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/10/swim-with-a-tiger-cub-at-fla-private-zoo/

In the video you’ll see a six-week-old tiger cub named Tony screaming as he is forced to swim with guests and then a reporter in a swimming pool at a backyard zoo in Dade City, Florida.

Exploiting tiger cubs by allowing the public to interact with them is not educational or “fun” but dangerous, misleading as well as harmful to the cubs. When these cubs are not longer “cute” and turn into 300 to 500 lb. predators, they face years of captive life in roadside zoos/exhibits and pseudo-sanctuaries. Others are bred to produce more cubs, end up in canned hunts, or are killed and sold on the black market.

Please be a voice for little Tony here:

and sign this petition:

Thanks for your support of Tony, little Tony and for all animals who deserve our respect and need our advocacy.
